Music for Dreams is a night-long sound composition that aims to influence the dream content of sleeping individuals listening to the piece. It is an attempt to establish an unconscious relationship between the music composition and the sleeping recipient.

External stimuli incorporation in dreams is a cognitive phenomenon of re-contextualising sounds from the outer environment into the dream. Music for Dreams aims to provide an auditory stimulus designed to trigger this mechanism.

The composition’s dynamics, tone and sound materials were influenced by the research of cognitive science of sleep and dreaming. The structure of the composition is closely related to the rhythm of the human sleeping cycle. Depending on the estimation of the sleeping phase the recipient might be in, Music for Dreams presents sounds that differ in their source, character and dynamics.

The 8-hour long piece was presented to 18 individuals who listened to the composition while sleeping in their own bedrooms. Feedback from participants has been analysed in order to investigate the process of sound re-contextualisation in dreams. Results (although equivocal) have indicated that sounds could affect participants' dreams, but the way of re-contextualisation varies widely in every case. Participants’ feedback also indicated that Music for Dreams not only influenced the content of their visions but also positively affected the ability to remember dreams.
